The Amstaff Legacy Project – A Tribute to Our Mentors and Our Breed

The Amstaff Legacy Project was born from a deep personal connection to the American Staffordshire Terrier, a journey that began for me back in 2006. At that time, there were only a handful of active breeders in Sweden. Eager to learn, I began reaching out to breeders from all over the world to gain as much knowledge as possible about the breed.

This was before the days of Facebook and instant social media connections. Communication took time, yet it was incredibly rewarding. As a first-time Amstaff owner, I was pleasantly surprised by how generously many of the “old-timers” shared their experiences, insights, and stories from their decades as breeders. Among the many who shaped my early understanding of the breed, I must mention names such as Richard Grey, Hendrix Harper, Peggy Doster, and Fred Sindelar – and the list could easily extend to 20 or more renowned breeders.

For me, it was always about education. And what better way to learn than from those who had devoted decades to breeding, training, and preserving the integrity of the Amstaff? Even today, I notice that not everyone takes the opportunity to truly learn before stepping into breeding. Too often, I see people register themselves as breeders after owning just their first Amstaff, without a deeper understanding or commitment to long-term development of the breed.

I am not suggesting that everyone must follow the exact same path I did. My journey took me across the world, meeting breeders with different philosophies and breeding goals – from pure bloodline preservation to show lines and working lines. I remain forever grateful for the warm welcome I received, and for the knowledge, passion, and dedication these breeders shared with me over the years.

The Purpose of This Project
The Amstaff Legacy Project is my way of giving back – both to the mentors who guided me and to the breed itself. My goal is to preserve and share the valuable knowledge of experienced breeders, ensuring that future generations understand the history, challenges, and responsibilities that come with breeding American Staffordshire Terriers.

I have already begun reaching out to breeders and sending out a detailed questionnaire to ensure consistency in the interviews. Each breeder receives a link to a private Google Drive folder containing the questions, along with an option to share supporting content such as photos, documents, videos, and interviews.

As this is a non-profit project, I will ensure that all shared content is protected. Before publication, a copyright notice will be added to prevent unauthorized use. This is done out of respect for the breeders who generously contribute their time, stories, and intellectual property. I kindly ask everyone to honor this principle.

This project is not just about documenting history—it’s about safeguarding the future of the American Staffordshire Terrier. Together, we can ensure that the breed we love will continue to thrive for decades to come.
